Find your perfect activism opportunity in inspirational and impactful activism. In this post, I discuss the importance of finding inspirational activism and provide a tool you can use to narrow your options to the one perfect for you.
In this video, Monique, who helps care for her brother with a disability, initially struggles to find meaningful activism:
When Monique considered her options for making a difference for caregivers she found inspirational activism at the intersection of her passion, skills, and motivation.
Match Your Passion and Gifts to Inspirational and Impactful Activism
Finding the kind of activism right for you involves matching your passion and skills with an activism technique that motivates you. Here are some examples of how different combinations of your skills and cause can lead to options for activism opportunities:
- Writing and Environmental Conservation: Write blog posts, articles, and social media content to raise awareness about environmental conservation.
- Public Speaking and Racial Equality: Lobby your elected representatives about legislation involving race.
- Theater and Peace: Write a powerful stage performance that highlights human rights atrocities that result from war.
- IT Skills and Feminism: Use your coding skills to create an app that helps women report workplace discrimination anonymously.
- Teaching and Consumer Activism: Develop financial viability education programs for local schools.
- Graphic Design and Immigration Rights: Create powerful visual campaigns for immigrant rights.
- Legal Expertise and Criminal Justice Reform: Provide pro bono legal services to wrongfully convicted people.
Finding Your Inspirational and Impactful Activism
Try using a tool recommended by Richard Bolles, the author of What Color is Your Parachute?, to find your perfect activism opportunity.
Using overlapping circles (Venn diagrams) helps you analyze the intersection of your skills and interests. This is a creative way to find unique combinations of your skill, cause, motivation, and activism technique.
The sweet spot for finding the right activism for you lies at the intersection of the circles.
Check out this video to see how intersections work:
Using Intersections Example
Here is a Venn diagram based on the previous example of “Theater and Peace: Write a powerful stage performance that highlights human rights atrocities that result from war.”
Your Turn
- Draw three overlapping circles labeled “Skill=__________,” “Cause=__________,,” and “Technique=__________.”
- Fill in the blanks in each circle.
- Brainstorm activism opportunities where all three circles overlap. These intersections are great places to find the kind of activism right for you.
- Try at least 6 intersections.
By thoughtfully combining the gifts you bring to the activism table, you can find inspirational and impactful ways to contribute to the cause closest to your heart.
