From Awareness to Action: Empowering People to Make a Difference in Social Justice

Last Updated on November 16, 2024

Social justice issues continue to dominate headlines, and it has never been more critical for all of us to take action. You can help create a more equitable and inclusive community by raising awareness and making change. Everyone’s social justice journey is unique, but we all move from awareness to action.

Awareness of Social Justice

Our journeys to activism are as unique as a snowflake. Some people are born into a family that fully participates in social justice work. Others end up in a family where parents don’t discuss these issues. And some families rail against liberal ideas and educate their children in conservative values. All of us, though, eventually became aware of the importance of social justice.

From Awareness to Action

Woman in shadow raising her fist. Social justice. The step from awareness to action is unique, too. It might look like

  1. Being an ally to someone experiencing an injustice.
  2. Signing petitions and attending protests.
  3. Join a nonprofit doing social justice work.
  4. Starting your own activism effort.

You might think that I recommend options 3 and 4. But instead, I recommend a more thoughtful approach in your journey from awareness to action.

With a thoughtful approach you will:

Understanding Social Justice: What is the Cause Closest to Your Heart?

Social justice is a broad concept that imagines a fair and equal distribution of resources, opportunities, and privileges.

For instance, according to a recent report by the United Nations, nearly half of the global population lives in poverty. Also, racial and ethnic injustice persists in education, healthcare, and criminal justice systems. Then there is gender inequality, LGBTQ+ rights, access to clean water and sanitation, and climate justice.

How can all these problems be solved? It is tempting to try to solve all the problems in your community, but it will only leave you overwhelmed and ineffective.

Instead, narrow your activism to the cause closest to your heart. Is that working on gender injustice? Or might you lean toward trying to eliminate poverty in your community?

Find the cause closest to your heart.

Use Your Gifts For Social Justice

Systemic justice is the goal, and each individual contributes to the effort. Even small actions can have a ripple effect and contribute to the larger goal of creating a more just and equitable society.

On the second step of the activism path, you inventory your gifts and use your best skills and personal motivation for social justice. For example, all nonprofits would welcome your help if you are good at marketing. Or perhaps you are a teacher; your impact in educating the public or preparing volunteers could be substantial.

Also, consider your personal motivation. Do you enjoy working with others? Or perhaps you are young and want to learn new skills. Match your personal motivation to your activism options.

Your Activism Method

When I first got off the sidelines, I jumped into traditional activism methods such as protesting and lobbying. But I didn’t enjoy the work. Although it sounds selfish, the work must be engaging and motivating. Social justice activism can be tough sometimes, but if you enjoy what you do, you will be engaged over the long term.

Explore activism methods to find one that lights your fire and is a good match for your skills. Activists use crafting, cooking, yoga, and playwriting to make change.

Making an Impact

As you consider the activism options in your community, consider your potential impact.

  1. How many lives can you change?
  2. Is the cause overlooked?
  3. Is change possible, or is the issue stagnant?

Your final decision should also consider how the option fits your skills and motivation. What is the perfect option for you?

Staying Motivated

Volunteers and activists who don’t take these thoughtful steps to prepare but rather jump off the sidelines into the fray often drop out. That is a terrible loss for any social justice movement. And even if you prepare carefully, staying motivated is essential. As you begin your journey from awareness to action, have a plan in place to stay motivated.

Your Path to Social Change

Narrowing your passion, matching your gifts to an activism method you enjoy, and finding the perfect social justice option are all crucial steps. With your help, we can ensure everyone has justice.
