What Are the Five Most Important Roles in Your Life?

Last Updated on June 5, 2025

We live complicated lives. When you think about the list of roles of person, it can seem daunting. But that is why listing the critical roles you play in life is so important. In this article, I provide guidance and examples of life roles.

Laura is thrilled to begin a competency-based online program for a master’s degree. A busy mom and teacher, she knows even a self-paced program will be difficult to manage along with other areas of her life. But having the degree will mean better opportunities and pay.

During the orientation, she is required to track her time for a week. First, she enters her planned schedule. This part is natural for Laura; being a teacher involves planning and organization. She blocks out her workday and other scheduled activities, such as church, volunteer work, and driving her kids to activities. Then she adds enough study time to get her degree completed within a year. Last, she adds time with her husband and exercise. Her schedule is packed.

At the end of each day, she notes what went well and what did not. For example, she records her son needing snacks for school at the last minute and a termite swarm in her living room. Her carefully prepared schedule blew up.

Laura’s decision to add the role of student meant she needed to reevaluate her roles in life. She learned from the time management exercise that she does not have enough time or physical and mental energy to do everything she wishes.

Your Important Roles

Being an activist is only one role you play in life. You may also be a spouse, parent, employee, house cleaner, cook, lawn mower, and caregiver. The list of roles of a person is vast. Having a distinct focus will help you fulfill the essential roles and rid yourself of those not part of your vision.

Make a list of the roles you play in life. You’ll come up with dozens.

Here’s the kicker. We can’t handle more than five roles well. Most of us are trying to juggle many instead of staying focused on a few important ones. For example, I can try to keep my house clean, organized, and stocked with the household goods we need. That’s a great idea. But what if I clean at the expense of other more important roles, such as being a parent? Is a tidy living room more important than spending time with my child?

Roles and Your Life Vision

My book, The Happy Activist: Journey the 5-Step Activism Path to Focus Your Passion and Change the World (formerly What’s On Your Sign?) helps people who want to get started in activism to get focused on issues most important to them. The first step on my activism path is finding the cause closest to your heart. Doing that means taking an in-depth look at how you want to live your life, your ideal world, and where there are gaps you want to change.

To create a vision for your ideal life, you examine the roles you play. What five roles are most important to you?

Find Your Passion

Everyone plays many roles throughout their lives, from dedicated spouse to supportive friend to inspiring mentor. Understanding the various roles you take on in life can help you draw greater purpose and satisfaction from each of them.

Included here is a worksheet on examples of life roles from The 5-Step Activism Path Workbook (formerly The What’s On Your Sign? Workbook.) Put a checkmark next to the roles you do now. Feel free to add roles to the list. Then, place a checkmark next to those roles you have not yet played but wish to.  Finally, pick your top five important roles in life.

Examples of Life Roles

List of roles of a person, with a column for I do this now and I wish I did this. List of roles you play in life.Choosing five important roles doesn’t mean you won’t occasionally play another role in your life. Also, your five roles will change. Being a parent is an example of one that changes dramatically over time. Being the parent of an infant is time-consuming, but gradually the time commitment wanes. I’m not saying that it gets easier, but time devoted to parenting can change. At the point you have no kids at home, you have room for other roles.

Laura Focuses Her Passion

At first, Laura thought the time management exercise was a little silly. But after the week was over, her reflection caused her to reevaluate her roles. Otherwise, she knew she could not be successful in all her current tasks. She used the examples of life roles to prioritize the roles of mother, wife, teacher, athlete, and student. That meant that for the next year, she would have to forgo many church and volunteer activities. She knew she could pick them up later after she picked up her degree. And what a weight taken off her shoulders!
