At the Intersection of Thanksgiving and a Vegan Rapper

What is Plant Based Drippin?

t-shirt sitting on a table with plant based drippin on it As I was browsing the tables at my local VeganFest, enjoying the vegan jewelry, tasting food samples, and learning about animal sanctuaries, I came upon a young man tending a table filled with t-shirts that said Plant-Based Drippin. I mustered my courage to ask him what that meant. He turned out to be Atlanta-based rapper Grey, also called the “Vegan Rapper,” and he explained that Plant Based Drippin means overflowing with style and flavor. When he chose plant based drippin he didn’t realize people might be confused about it, however, he is delighted when they ask so he can talk about the benefits of a plant-based diet.

Grey spoke about the importance of remembering that life conditioned us to eat meat and dairy products our entire lives. Changing your outlook on your diet means changes in many aspects of life. Just a few minutes with this joyful person is a great advertisement for a plant-based diet.

Beans, Greens, Potatoes, Tomatoes Video

In November 2016, he released his now famous Vegan Thanksgiving Rap based on Shirley Caesar’s “Beans, Greens, Potatoes, Tomatoes” lyrics. Caesar’s “Hold My Mule” inspired a freestyle rap for his #GreyCantFreestyle series. The rap went viral and got retweeted by music producer and vegan Russell Simmons. To capitalize on the attention, Grey refined the words and produced a professional video.

Caesar sings “I got beans, greens, potatoes, tomatoes, lambs, rams, dogs, hogs, chickens, turkeys, rabbits.” Grey’s version is different.

Beans, greens, potatoes, tomatoes
Lambs, rams, hogs, dogs
Beans, greens, potatoes, tomatoes
(Ain’t #^%$ with the) Chicken, turkeys, rabbits, you name it!
(Let’s go, I got) Beans, greens, potatoes, tomatoes
(No room for the) Lambs, rams, hogs, dogs
(But you know I got) Beans, greens, potatoes, tomatoes
(No) Chicken, turkeys. chicken, turkeys (let’s go, baby)
Beans, greens, potatoes, tomatoes
(You know I gotta get seconds, man)
Beans, greens, potatoes, tomatoes (yeah)
Beans, greens, beans, greens (let’s go)
Beans, beans, beans, beans (ay)

Recently, my area held the Vegan Chef Challenge, and a vegan soul food restaurant created the special “Beans Greens Potatoes Tomatoes.” How fun. And it is definitely worthy of the description of plant-based dripping.

The Vegan Rapper Branches Out

Grey created a line of clothing and accessories based on plant based drippin. And in 2019, he held the first Plant-Based Drippin Festival where people could listen to music and eat fabulous vegan food.

You can listen to more of Grey’s music on Soundcloud.

Happy Vegan Thanksgiving!
